Messner Reeves LLP is pleased to welcome new attorney, Cassandra S.M. Cummings, to the firm’s Las Vegas office. Ms. Cummings is an associate in the firm’s Litigation department focusing on areas of insurance defense, premises liability, and construction defect. Ms. Cummings’ experience in these fields began while attending the University of Oregon School of Law during which times she was a law clerk for an insurance defense attorney. After graduating from law school, Ms. Cummings returned to Las Vegas where she earned her undergraduate degree. Ms. Cummings then began working with a construction defect firm where she defended developers in complex construction defect cases.

Ms. Cummings was raised in the small coastal town of Newport, Oregon, but felt the draw of the bright lights of Las Vegas, which led her to UNLV. While attending UNLV, Ms. Cummings put her classical ballet training to work as the assistant manager of Capezio Dance Theater Shop where she assisted dancers of all ages and worked with many of the large shows on the Las Vegas Strip.

Jeremy Wysocki is a member of the firm’s Corporate and Taxation Practice Groups. Mr. Wysocki advises a variety of clients, including, without limitation, individuals, corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, sole proprietorships, trade associations, and not-for-profit entities on organizational, general corporate, corporate compliance and governance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance, private equity, securities and taxation matters, choice of entity, exit strategy, business divorce and related matters.

Abigail Nitka opened the New York office with Partner JC Mazzola in July 2013. Abigail’s practice focuses on representation of large and small businesses in litigation and other disputes. Recently her practice has expanded to representation of local, regional, and national members of the restaurant and hospitality industry in individual and class action wage and hour litigation, covering claims for misclassification of employees, retaliation, spread of hours pay and other alleged violations. She also has experience defending against lawsuits alleging non-compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and related state and local laws. Her practice in this area extends to premises liability, liquor liability and food-borne illness claims.

Jacqueline Guesno joined the firm in 2012 and is a partner in our Litigation Labor and Employment Department. Ms. Guesno is an accomplished trial attorney who began her career in 2003 as a Colorado State Public Defender in Arapahoe County where she tried in excess of 70 major felony jury trials. Since joining Messner Reeves, Ms. Guesno has demonstrated her skill in successfully litigating complex, trial-bound employment cases across the country, as well as expanding the firm's expertise to include criminal defense. Throughout her career, Ms. Guesno has earned a reputation as a fierce, tenacious, and highly skilled advocate, who has achieved a high rate of success for her clients and in turn has earned the respect of state and federal judges and fellow attorneys.

Charles Cavanagh is a member of the firm’s Litigation and Labor & Employment Practice Groups. Mr. Cavanagh is admitted to both the Colorado and California bars. After a decade of practicing law in California, he moved to Colorado and joined Messner Reeves to assist with the California needs of the firm’s clients, while continuing to develop his own trial and appellate practices. Mr. Cavanagh has extensive experience litigating in both federal and state trial and appellate courts.

As a member of the firm's Corporate and Real Estate Practice Groups, Mr. Torben Welch's practice focuses on advising corporate clients, mortgage lenders, real estate professionals and professional athletes with their legal needs. Duties include asset acquisitions, contract and lease negotiation, document review and analysis, development and growth strategies, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, workout and recovery strategy, etc. Mr. Welch also serves as outside general counsel to clients providing risk management and assessment, asset management/leasing, litigation prevention, management of outside counsel on litigation and related matters, etc.

In addition, Mr. Welch represents a variety of creditors in bankruptcy matters, including handling Chapter 7, 11 and 13 proceedings, proof of claim submissions, Chapter 11 and 13 plan review and objections, relief from automatic stay issues, objections to discharge, etc.

As part of the firm's Litigation Practice Group, Mr. Caleb Meyer focuses on trial advocacy and the representation of individuals, insurance companies, and business entities in courts of law, arbitration, mediation, and other regulatory proceedings. He has litigated and tried numerous cases including matters involving complex commercial litigation, medical/healthcare claims, insurance coverage, insurance bad faith, construction defect, employment, catastrophic personal injury, general liability and contract.
Mr. Meyer also takes an active role in the legislative process on behalf of the civil defense industry by helping to craft and amend proposed legislation to protect individual and business interests in the community and enhance the ability of clients to successfully litigate civil claims.

Mark’s litigation practice focuses on litigation counsel, advice, and risk management in medical, dental, and mental health care. Mark represents practitioners and health-related entities in malpractice cases, and assisting professionals in front of licensing boards including the Colorado Medical Board, Board of Dental Examiners, Board of Nursing, and the mental health boards. Messner Reeves LLP is pleased to announce the addition of an esteemed attorney and liquor licensing consultant.

Kate Mowry, Of Counsel, joins Messner Reeves’ Labor and Employment and Worker's Compensation practices. As an AV rated attorney, Ms. Mowry has nearly two decades of extensive experience litigating cases ranging from worker's compensation claims through the Colorado appellate courts.  She has handled every type of worker's compensation matter, as well as, administrative proceedings filed with the EEOC and Colorado Civil Rights Division. She has also participated in trials in both state and federal courts involving a range of issues, including employment contract disputes; sexual harassment; age, race, gender and disability discrimination; and retaliation claims.  Ms. Mowry has also represented clients in general litigation matters, including subrogation issues, negligence and premises liability cases. Ms. Mowry is licensed to practice in both Colorado and the 10th Circuit in Federal Court.

Mr. Gebers serves on the City and County of Denver-Department of Excise and Licensing Advisory Committee and is an active member of the National Association of Licensing and Compliance Professionals.

Marie L. Wrighten-Douglass joined the firm’s L.A. office as Of Counsel. A trial lawyer with over 20 years of experience in civil litigation and sophisticated criminal matters, Marie Wrighten-Douglass has a proven track record of getting results that matter. Focusing on business and employment litigation with an emphasis on class actions, complex commercial matters, business torts, and intellectual property disputes, Ms. Wrighten-Douglass brings a unique combination of legal acumen, keen sensibilities, and a passion for work to the firm’s General Litigation Practice Group.

In both state and federal courts, Ms. Wrighten-Douglass has successfully litigated matters for individuals, governmental entities, and Fortune 500 companies that involve claims for false advertising, wrongful termination, sexual harassment, discrimination, trade secret misappropriation, unfair competition, and unfair trade practices

Adam M. Royval is an associate in the Denver office’s litigation section and works primarily in the Labor and Employment Group. He regularly litigates employment, general liability, construction and insurance issues.

Wendy Lindstrom is an experienced commercial litigator who focuses on art law, transportation and logistics, cargo, international and interstate commerce, maritime law and complex commercial matters. She drafts and negotiates contracts and litigates matters involving fine art, jewelry, specie, commercial collections, transportation and related logistical services.

Lou Grossman is a member of the firm’s litigation team. Mr. Grossman joined Messner Reeves as Of Counsel after serving as a partner in the New Orleans office of Kean Miller LLP. For over 11 years, Lou practiced law in Louisiana focusing his efforts on complex litigation. During his tenure in Louisiana, Lou served as lead counsel in disputes involving toxic exposures, environment contamination and compliance, complex commercial transactions, railroad crossing accident litigation, and claims arising under the Federal Employer’s Liability Act. Lou is listed in Louisiana Super Lawyers as a Rising Star for 2013 and 2014 and is an AV-Rated attorney with Martindale-Hubbell.

Alyson Seifert is an associate in the firm’s Corporate Practice Group. Ms. Seifert assists clients with entity formation, corporate transactions, and other various transactional matters. While in law school, Ms. Seifert served as a judicial intern and was a student attorney at the University of Denver’s Civil Litigation Clinic. She also served as a staff editor on the University of Denver’s Criminal Law Review.

Katherine Whitney is an associate in the firm’s Real Estate and Corporate Practice Groups. She is passionate about working with small and mid-size businesses, believing they are the backbone of our community. She enjoys resolving real property disputes and has experience drafting a variety of real estate documents including leases, purchase and sales agreements, and easement.

Messner Reeves LLP is pleased to announce the addition of 5 highly regarded attorneys to the firm, namely Mary Fletcher, Thomas McGrath, Allison Dodd, Sarah Smith, and Vanessa Devereaux. This exceptional team will contribute to the firm's litigation, labor and employment, and real estate practice areas.

Mary Fletcher represents individuals, businesses and insurance companies in the litigation of civil claims in state and federal court from receipt of the claim through appeal. Ms. Fletcher focuses her practice on defending physicians, health care facilities and other health care providers against claims of malpractice and negligence in litigation, at trial and in licensing board matters. Ms. Fletcher also has significant experience representing insurance carriers in bad faith and coverage disputes under a wide variety of commercial insurance policies.  

Thomas McGrath is licensed to practice in all courts in California and Nevada. He earned his juris doctorate from University of California, Hastings College of Law in 1992 and spent his first seven years practicing in the Bay Area. Prior to joining Messner Reeves LLP, Mr. McGrath was the Managing Attorney for American Family Insurance Company's in-house legal office in Las Vegas.  He also previously managed his own private practice, representing primarily individual defendants and rental car companies in third party bodily injury cases.  Mr. McGrath possesses extensive experience litigating first party bad faith and third party bodily injury lawsuits.

Allison Dodd contributes to the firm's Litigation Practice and Labor and Employment Groups. Her litigation experience ranges from defending manufacturers in products liability matters, litigating bad faith cases, representing business owners in a variety of person injury actions, defending employers in discrimination actions, and representing professionals in construction defect actions. Ms. Dodd has also represented clients in a variety of corporate matters in the education and non-profit fields.

Allison Dodd was selected as a 2014 Super Lawyers Rising Star. She is licensed to practice law in Colorado and North Dakota.

Sarah Smith is a trial attorney in the Messner Reeves Las Vegas office. Ms. Smith’s professional experience ranges from defending clients against criminal prosecution, litigating personal injury cases, representing corporate clients against first party and bad faith claims, as well as, extensive experience in appellate law. Ms. Smith is licensed to practice law in Washington and Nevada and admitted to practice in the United States District Court for the District of Nevada.

Vanessa Devereaux is originally from the San Luis Valley. She began her career as a Deputy Public
Defender for the Alamosa Regional Office. Ms. Devereaux has experience practicing in both county and district criminal courts and is a tireless advocate for her clients and their families.
Ms. Devereaux recently participated in a year-long Criminal and Immigration Defense Clinic where she represented clients in criminal court and federal administrative proceedings.
